In January 2001 Fiona fell at the Baggage Claim in LAX (The Los Angeles International Airport), when bending over to pick up her luggage. "I had to cancel scheduled meetings and stayed in the hotel bed praying I would be okay... finally the ambulance came and I was taken to hospital." She recalls.

Fiona is a regional sales manager of a large San Jose, California-based computer software maker. The then 33-year-old was on the fast track and had everything she needed for success. But her life was about to change forever.

She was diagnosed osteoporosis and as a result, a couple of fractured vertebrae. "I was caught in surprise but wasn't too concerned then. I knew my mom had osteoporosis for long time. She's been taking medicine... seems like she's doing just fine."

The career woman was asked to take Actonel, a prescription drug for osteoporosis. "I never had second thought on medicines. They gave me peace of mind. So I went on with my life, even though I was always limited by lingering pain."

Fiona's job requires frequent traveling. At times she has to carry around loads of documentations. "It was so painful every time I lift the bags and push them into a cabinet (on board airplane). I had no choice - it's part of my job."

Soon she found herself with blurred vision. She was also having trouble falling asleep. And the pain wasn't going away. Fiona became depressed. Eventually it got to a point that she started to behave abnormally in front of her clients.

In March 2002 the company requested that she take a 6-week paid time-off to rejuvenate. "I saw it's coming but still it's very hard to accept when it actually took place." Fiona says. "Everything I had, everything I fought for, were drifting away from me - it was devastating. I was so close to have a nervous breakdown."

But she's not ready to give in yet. After weeks of rest, Fiona realized that the only way she could get her life back was to get healthy quickly.

The first thing she did was to quit the medications she's been taking. She suspected that they have something to do with her loss of vision. Two weeks later her vision was back to normal. Sleep quality also improved. But she knew she needed more than that.
