Letter I: From Joe C.

(Unedited)

I am 77 years old and have been taking 10 caps a day for two years for my bones. My weight is 170. I am trying to improve my bone scan results.

I must tell you that I was involved in a accident, where I was reaching into my van on the passenger side when a runaway car crossed the highway at full throttle and hit the driver side of my van, my feet were on the ground my shins against the bottom of the door frame, my van was pushed 7 ft with my shins against the door frame.

I did get trauma to my legs but my bones took that impact and there was no damage to the bones. An x ray showed no fracture or any damage to my bones. The Doctor was shocked, asked me what I take. I told him Ezorb he said he would start taking it too.

Feel free to use this story. Ezorb helped making my bones stronger keeping them from breaking.

Thanks,

Joe

I just wanted to let you know I got my new results. I have been on EZorb for a little over a year now and have been supplementing with Evista and Forteo.

I will be 54 in a couple of weeks and my T Scores were plummeting until this year. I have stopped losing bone and have increased my bone density by 17% in the spine and 6% in the hips.

My T score is now -2.5 in the spine and it was -3.5 last year. My hips are no longer osteoporotic. I am thrilled with the results!

Thank you EZorb!

2. Research News: Eating Fish Reduces Diabetes Risk

Analysis of data from over 100,000 individuals in China has shown that eating fish and shellfish significantly reduces the risk for developing diabetes.

Introducing their study, Raquel Villegas (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA) and colleagues write: "One of the dietary factors postulated to influence the development of Type 2 diabetes is long-chain polyunsaturated n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids, which are found mainly in fish."

This idea is based on observations that diabetes incidence is low in countries where fish consumption is high, but is also supported by preclinical work suggesting that insulin sensitivity is closely related to the amount of long-chain n-3 fatty acids found in cell membranes.

Despite these observations, intervention studies have failed to show a beneficial impact of boosting long-chain n-3 fatty acid intake on insulin sensitivity or blood glucose concentrations.

Noting this, Villegas and team undertook a prospective evaluation of data collected from 51,963 men aged 40-74 years and 64,193 women aged 40-70 years involved in ongoing studies. None of the participants had Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer at baseline.

The data, which were collected by interview every 2 years over a follow-up period of up to 9 years, covered daily diet, physical activity levels, anthropometric measurements, and residential and occupational history, as well as recording any official diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.

As reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, increased intake of fish, shellfish, and long-chain n-3 fatty acids was associated with a significantly decreased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in women. In men, only shellfish intake predicted a significantly decreased risk for diabetes.

The greatest decrease in risk in women was observed in the fourth quintile of fish and shellfish consumption, with diabetes incidence being decreased by 20% compared with the lowest quintile. In men, the greatest benefit was for those in the fourth quintile of shellfish consumption, with a 34% lower risk for developing diabetes versus men in the lowest quintile.

The authors admit that their work is limited because it relied on patient reports of diabetes incidence and, for some patients, the follow-up period was only 4.1 years. It is therefore possible that some cases of diabetes were present at the start of the study and not detected over the follow-up period.

Nevertheless, they conclude: "The findings of this study add to the limited data on associations between intakes of fish, shellfish, and long-chain n-3 fatty acids and the risk of Type 2 diabetes."

Original research is published in Am J Clin Nutr 2011; Advance online publication.
