"I was a Failure"
"I am 34 years old, female, and I live alone in
St. Paul, Minnesota. I hope my story will help those who
have the same problems I had experienced." Sarah
wrote.
Four years ago Sarah had a Gastric Bypass Surgery.
"Fat is in my gene. My mom and her family were
obese, my brother too. I have not always been big but I
have always felt I was. It got to a point I had no
choice but surgery."
Everything seemed fine until a year after. "One
morning I found it very difficult to get up, and it took
me longer than usual to get out of bed." Like
everybody else Sarah simply took some painkillers and
thought it was just a one-time thing. But the very next
day she had the same problem again and this time with
more pain on the back.
A week went by the pain got worse. Sarah was forced
to see her doctor. She was then referred to a specialist
who sent her for various tests, scans and x-rays.
The reports came out three days later. The specialist
informed her that she had osteoporosis and had lost over
60% of her bone mass. She's also diagnosed disc
degenerative disease. The pain was caused by two
fractured vertebrae.
"I was aware of the risk (of bone loss). They'd
told me I needed to take supplements because my system
wouldn't be able to absorb enough nutrition after the
surgery... and that's what I did, - I had a full cabinet
of vitamins, - calcium, magnesium, Vitamin C, D,
multivitamins, you name it. What else could I've
done?"
Sarah's world had come to a standstill. No more
strenuous activities, only lighter tasks. She had to
quit her day job at a local manufacturer as it turned
out driving to work was too dangerous - she got dizzy
and had blurred vision several times during rush hour.
"I knew the problems had everything to do with the
drugs I was taking... but I had no choice, I wanted to
get my life back on track." - No pain no gain?
But things were not getting better as she expected.
Three months later she broke several ribs while lifting
a storage box. This time it hit her hard - poor Sarah
cried in tears all night long. Not because of the
unbearable pain - she had learned to deal with it.

hopes I had all those time had diminished... was
helpless, and scared."
"My life turned into a corner. I had constant
pain, no job, and I started drinking again. I was a
failure. I knew it everyday." Sarah said of her at
that time.
Christmas of 2001 brought her a special present from
