Letter I: From Annie V.

Hi, my name is Annie V. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2003, and since I have gastritis, I could not take any of the prescriptions offered.

I did some research online and am I glad I did. I came upon the site for EZorb, ordered it, and have been taking it ever since. I HAVE NO PAIN!!!

Doctors are surprised when I tell them I am pain free, as I was in a semi-truck accident and as a result, my head is pulled over to my right shoulder. There is nothing they can do about this, but the doctors say I should be in terrific pain from the pulling on my spine.

My osteoporosis has been reversed to osteopenia.

I am 73 years of age and come from a family of arthritis. I am learning how to play a guitar and also paint. I have no pain in my hands or fingers.

I live in an assisted living facility and have gotten several residents started on EZorb. PLEASE don't ever stop making EZorb.

Thank God for you.

Annie V.

Hi,

I just wanted to say that I have been taking ezorb calcium for about 10 weeks now, after I received a diagnosis of osteoporosis in January.

Almost immediately I had much less pain in my hips and back! I could barely believe how well it works. Please note that I am 67 years old female and very small boned the perfect storm for osteoporosis.

In a couple of weeks I will be done with the loading phase and be ready to reduce the dose. I am delighted with the results and have gone back to work feeling so much stronger.

Won't have another dexa scan for a while, but I really feel so much better I do not dread having the next one.

Thank You for a great product!

Frannie in N.H.

2. New Research: Dark Chocolate May Reduce Hypertension

An Australian study confirms reports that eating dark chocolate may reduce systolic blood pressure (SBP) in patients with hypertension and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in patients with pre-hypertension.

Karin Ried (University of Adelaide, South Australia) and colleagues attribute the BP lowering ability of dark chocolate to the presence of the polyphenol flavanol in cocoa products. "Flavanols have been shown to increase the formation of endothelial nitric oxide, which promotes vasodilation and consequently may lower BP," they explain.

Ried commented: "We found that [dark chocolate] consumption can significantly, albeit modestly, reduce blood pressure for people with high blood pressure but not for people with normal blood pressure."

The team reviewed the results of 15 studies comparing the effects of cocoa-free placebo (white chocolate, milk chocolate, or placebo capsules) versus flavanol-containing cocoa products on the blood pressures of hypertensive, pre-hypertensive, and normotensive patients for 2 to 18 weeks.

The polyphenol content (defined as flavanol, polyphenol proanthocyanidin, epicatechin, and catechin) of the cocoa product consumed by participants varied between each study, from 30 mg/day to 1008 mg/day.

In the studies reviewed, SBP was defined as hypertensive if ¡Ý140 mmHg and normotensive if <140 mmHg. DBP was defined as hypertensive or pre-hypertensive if ¡Ý80 mmHg and normotensive if <80 mmHg.

Analyses of the sub-groups, published in BMC Medicine, revealed a significant reduction in the SBPs of hypertensive patients and DBPs of pre-hypertensive/hypertensive patients taking cocoa products, with a mean reduction of 5.0 mmHg (p=0.0009) and 2.7 mmHg (p=0.01), respectively, compared with those taking placebo.

In normotensive patients however, the consumption of cocoa products had no significant effect on BP compared with placebo, with non-significant mean reductions of 1.6 mmHg in SBP and 1.3 mmHg in DBP.

The researchers conclude that despite its small size, the reported BP reductions arising from cocoa consumption has significant clinical relevance as "a decline of 5 mmHg in SBP may reduce the risk of a cardiovascular event by about 20% over 5 years."

They add: "The effect of cocoa in a hypertensive population is comparable to other lifestyle modifications, such as moderate physical activity (30 min/d) [which] may reduce SBP by 4-9 mmHg."

Despite the encouraging findings of the study, Reid et al warn that "daily chocolate consumption may not be an acceptable and practical treatment option."

Original study was published in BMC Medicine 2010; 8: 39
